The Public Works Department provides for the maintenance of City owned streets, buildings/facilities and motor vehicles. The Department is responsible for the placement of utilities in street right-of-way; provides engineering comments on proposed land partitions, land use variances, street vacations, zoning changes and building site plans. We issue street right-of-way permits for water and sewer services, driveway and private utility installations; inspect all street, water and sewer drainage improvement construction.


Street Maintenance includes grading and dust control on 25.04 miles of Rural Roads and pavement repair and sweeping on 19.32 miles of Urban Roads,  winter sand/salt applications, snow removal, street and traffic control signing, striping, and drainage ditch/piping maintenance.

Building Maintenance includes providing maintenance to other City Departments regarding general building facility maintenance efforts including, Police Department, Fire Department, Library, Airport Terminal, Port and Harbor, Public Works Building, Homer Educational & Recreation Center and the Animal Shelter.

 

Motor Pool services are provided for the repair and maintenance of police, fire, port and harbor, and public works vehicles. This maintenance effort includes work on both light duty and heavy construction equipment. (Est. $2,000,000 of rolling stock.)

 

Port Maintenance includes 772 stalls, and 4,000 feet of Transient Moorage (small vessel  and large vessel) harbor, floats, ramps, elec. service, water service, lighting, upland facilities, Deep Water Cargo Dock, Main and Ferry Dock.

 

Utilities Maintenance:

  • Water:  48.65 miles of water distribution main lines, 332 fire hydrants, 567 main line gate valves and 22 water pressure reducing stations.
  • Wastewater:  44.70 miles of wastewater collection main lines, 731 sanitary sewer manholes and 9 wastewater lift/pump stations.
